*608 - counterpoint

I'm so glad Joyce convinced me to take her composition class this semester.

It seems like my modern choreography of late tends to head quite clearly in the direction of "chance operations", as inspired by Cunningham. For today's assignment, I decided to choreograph my lower body and upper body totally independently of each other and then put them together. Result: extreme physical & coordination challenges, but a very surprising dance to watch. Interesting dynamics, random juxtaposition, unexpected counterpoint. Definitely something I want to explore.

(Although I think I'm going to ache severely tomorrow)

It's interesting because I've always had more of an affinity towards 'mainstream' dances with technique and structure - ballet, jazz, lyrical, laoshi-type modern, social dances. I still love that stuff but have discovered over the past year or so a whole new realm of dance that excites me more than anything I've done. Even modern technique classes are exciting, but maybe that's because I'm taking classes with Jim, whom I adore ;)

Now to find 2 dancers to perform my choreography next week - in the middle of prelim period. Awesome.

Example of a Cunningham piece. Modern dance is not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally think it's brilliant.
